Step I Lead-in (2 minutes)
T: Class begins! Good morning, girls!
S: Good morning, teacher!
T: Sit down, please!
T: In the last lesson, we’ve learned something about songs and poems, right? So which one do you like better? Songs or poems?
S: Songs!
T: Well. I think most of you prefer songs. Each song has different topics. Foe example, what the topic of “Jiang Nan”?
S: Love!
T: Good! It’s something about love. What about “ The sea”?
S: Nature!
T: Well, it is something about nature.
Step Ⅱ Integrating Skills ( 8 minutes)
T: There are so many songs. Some makes you happy, some makes you sad. Different people have different feelings about songs. Now will you please turn to page 31 and look at paragraph 12 and 3. Let’s do a fast reading and see what does the writer feel about songs. While reading, try to find out the answer to a question: Which topic of songs does the writer like best? Now I’ll give you 2 minutes.
(2 minutes later)
T: Ok. Time’s up. Have you found the answer? Which topic of songs does the writer like ?
S: Songs about love and friendship.
T: Good. Most of the songs nowadays are all about love and friendship. These songs are liked by many people. But only a few people are interested in reading poems. In a degree, poetry is more difficult. Poetry uses many difficult words and idioms. In our Chinese lesson, our teacher always explains the poem one word by one word to us. Do you like this way?
S: No.
T: For myself, I don’t like it either. In my opinion, it doesn’t ’t matter whether you can understand a poem or not, just read it loudly and you’ll fall into the rhyme. Everyone can have his own understanding of a poem. Do you agree with me?
S: Yes.
T: Now let’s look at paragraph 4 and 5 and see how does the writer read poems. Read the two paragraphs quickly and find out answers to the question: What kind of poems does the writer like? I’ll give you 2 minutes.
(2 minutes later)
T: Ok. Time’s up. Have you found the answer? What kind of poems does the writer like?
S: Long poems!
T: Yes. Very good. Long poems. So this text is about songs and poems.
Step Ⅲ More Information (6 minutes)
T: In the first lesson, we’ve learnt that songs came from poetry, remember?
S: Yes.
T Good. Then do you know why did people invent poetry?
S: To express their feelings.
T: Yes. It is a reason. Good! But at first, people made poetry just to remember things because the rhyme and rhythm were very helpful when they are trying to remember things. They made great stories of a hero to remember the history. E.g. “ Chang Hen Ge” was written to remember Yang Yuhuan and the emperor in Tang dynasty. Have you heard of this poem?
S: Yes.
T: Because of these poems, we can have a more colorful history. In fact, we’ve learnt many poems in our math class. E.g. ”Multiply one by one equals one, Multiply one by two equals two……”Right? Nowadays people no longer read poetry to remember things. But we can also use it to help us learn things better. E.g. look at this poem.
30 days has September.
April, June and November.
All the rest have 31. Fine!
February 28 except when 29.
T: Who’d like to read it for us? Good,**,please.
S: ……
T: Can you understand this poem? Why did people invent this poem?
S: To help us to remember how many days each month has.
StepⅣ Listening (30 minutes )
A Lead-in (5 minutes)
T: Quite Right! But nowadays, most of the poems are used to appreciate. They went to the library to find poems. In the library, there are so many books on poetry. Some books listed all the works of one poet. And other books are collections of many poets, just like music albums, right? Here I’ve got a book on poetry (show them the book). What’s the name of this book? (Ask a student to read it out)
S: 英国诗歌选集。
T: so is it a collection or is it a book of one poet?
S: A collection.
T: Good! It’s a collection! Now let’s see whose poems has it got? (Open the book) Yes. Shelley, Byron and of course Shakespeare. For each person, the book listed 3 or 4 poems. So the poems are sorted by names, right? And what about this book? Is it sorted by name?
S: No. By time.
T: Right! It was sorted by a period of time. Now let’s see. There are altogether 300 poems in this book. Will you be patient enough to read those poems one by one?
S: No.
T: Of course not. So most of the times, I’ll go through the book and choose some that I like best. Let’s see. This collection has many topics. We’ve learnt the words”topic”, right? e.g. “daffodil”, so this poem talks about nature. Besides, there are many topics, such as love, the war.
B Listening (25 minutes)
First listening
T: Nowadays, there are still groups of people who are interested in reading those poems. So does Wang Ming. Today Wang Ming went to a library. What does he going to do? Now let’s listen to the dialogue between Wang Ming and the librarian. This dialogue is a bit difficult. But don’t worry, for the first time, what you should do is just close the book and catch the general idea. There are 2 questions for you to answer. Please look at the slide.
