A Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many; for example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The earth shakes. Houses fall down. Railway lines are broken--.Sometimes many people are killed in an earthquake. Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes(火山),but this is not always true. The centers of some are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings; sometimes they break more buildings than earthquake itself. What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete(混泥土)walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame(框架)will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together, and the walls do not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel do not burn. This kind of building is the safest. 46.Whic of the following shows that an earthquake happens? A.The earth and the buildings shake badly. B.There is a great noise in the sky. C.The sky is covered with thick clouds. D.The tigers and the lions in the zoo run about nervously. 47.Why do we say that an earthquake is terrible? Because______. A.disappear quickly B.are beautiful to look at C.travel distantly D.are helpful to mankind 49.Which is the safest building for us to live in against earthquakes? A.A building with a steel frame and concrete walls. B.A very tall one. C.A house made of good bricks. D.A house without a roof. 50.Which of the following countries has the largest number of earthquakes? A.Britain. B.Japan C.France D.Germany B Some people seem to have a knack(诀窍)for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any cleverer than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them. First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns(句型)and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues(线索)and form their own conclusions(结论).When they look for such a chance. They ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate(交际).They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practise using the language regularly because they want to learn with it. What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand , if your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques discussed above. 51.If you want to be a successful language learner, you should________. A.be cleverer than others B.learn the language independently, actively, and purposefully C.master the rule of grammar D.remember the meaning of every word. 52.Independent language learning means_______. A.one can not learn a language well without a teacher B.one should try not to make any mistakes C.one should try to understand for himself what he is learning D.one should ask his teacher to explain the difficult points 53.An active language learner is the one who______. A.makes use of any chance to practise the language B.tries to accept as much information as he can C.thinks it more important to know the meaning of every word D.is waiting for difficult communication with others 54.The last sentence suggests that_______. A.unsuccessful language learners should try the techniques of successful language learners B.less successful language learners try to use successful language techniques C.there are different techniques for language learners to try D.less successful language learning is the result of using these techniques 55.The author(作者)writes this article to _______. A.answer some questions about language learning B.explain why language learning is difficult C.tell us which language learning technique is more helpful D.encourage language learners to use these techniques C People often collect things. Stamps, books and records are fairly common. But the strangest collection I have ever seen belongs to a man who possesses 1,500 clocks. There are clocks in every room of his house. The living- room is surrounded by shelves which have been filled with clocks. As there is not enough room for so many clocks, the man has filled several trucks and stored them in the garage. His wife complains every day about the work she has to do, for it is not easy to dust several hundred clocks. She also complains about the noise. Each clock keeps its own time, so chimes can be heard almost any time during the day and night. In her opinion, however, there is some-thing even worse than dust and noise. Even with so many clocks around, she never knows what time it is! 56.The writer has ever seen a man who owns 1,500 clocks, he feels it______. A.excited B.surprised C.strange D.interested 57.According to the story, we can see that people like collecting_______.
