Title of the lesson: Unit 3 Going places Type of the lesson: New lessons Teaching aims: To encourage the students to communicate with each other on the topic of travel. Teaching contents: 1. Teaching aids: multimedia computer, photos of landscape, tape recorder Period 1: Warming up Procedures: Step I. Lead in: Ask the students to talk about their experience of travel. Q: 1.Do you like traveling? 2.What places have you ever visited so far? 3.Can you recognize the following places in the pictures? Hainan( seaside) HongKong (a modern city) Lugouqiao(a place of interest) Huangshan( a mountain) Step II. Ask the students to discuss the questions and exchange their opinion in a group of four with the teacher’s instruction. Task 1: Make a travel plan for National Day. Situation: National Day is coming. We will have a week-long holiday. Q1: If you have a chance to visit, which place would you like to go to, Hainan, HongKong, Lugou Bridge or Huangshan? Why? Ask the Ss to choose their favorite place to go and give reasons. For example, what they love to do there, what they can learn about, what attracts them and so on. I would like to go __________, because I love __________________ and Travel ----- place to choose I can learn ________________. On the other hand, ___________________. Q2: Since your destination has been decided, you will consider how you are getting there. And why? The most important thing is that I _____________. Task 2: Report one’s travel plan Situation : Suppose you are a reporter. You are making a travel investigation in the street. You want to know which place the people will go to and how they will go there on vocations. Ask one student to act a reporter, and others will be passengers. Step III. Writing Ask the Ss to write a short passage with the title “ Going to ________” Period 2: Listening & Speaking Aims: 1. To improve the listening and speaking ability 2. To enrich the students’ imaginations by doing the speaking task. Procedures: Step I. Listening 1. Ask the students to listen to the boarding calls a. Listen to the tape once and answer the question. Q: Where is the speaker? b. Listen to the tape once more and write down the correct flight number, destination and gat e that the students have heard. 2. Ask the students to listen to the travelers. a. Listen to the tape and answer the following questions: Q 1: Where are the travelers? 2: What did they do? 3: How did they travel? b. According to the information, ask the students to guess where they are. Step II. Speaking 1. Lead in: Ask the students to talk about the means of transportation. 2. Ask the students to read the speaking instruction with the question and make clear what the time machine can do Q: What is the time machine? 3. Get the students to make a investigation in a group of four, and write down their answers on page 16. 4. Practise the dialogue in a group of four. 5. Get several groups to present their dialogue. Period 3: Reading Aims: 1. To improve the students’ reading and speaking ability. 2. To encourage them to talk about the kinds of travel. Aids: tape recorder, video, pictures Procedure: Step I. Lead in: 1. Show the students video about some activities in adventure travel 2. Ask the students whether activities they have just seen on video are the same as the travel activities that they are familiar with. Step II. Text learning. 1. Ask the students to read the text quietly with the question: Q: What are the two popular activities mentioned in the text? Hiking Adventure travel Rafting 2. Get the Students to listen to the tape and read the text again and underline the difficult language points that they don’t understand. 3. Work on the new items and difficult sentences. New words: Ask the students to guess unknown word: equipment poisonous according to the contest stream paddle raft whitewater safety according to the word building excitement successful Difficult sentences: Help the students to understand the following questions by asking them questions. a. You should not go rafting unless you know how to swim. Q: What does “unless” mean? Ask the students to rewrite the sentence: --- You should not go rafting if you don’t know how to swim. b. Many people travel because they want to see other countries and visit places that are famous, interesting or beautiful. Q: What do they want to see? What are famous, interesting or beautiful? So what does “that” refer to? Put the sentence into Chinese. c. A raft is a small boat that you can use to paddle down rivers and streams. Q: What can we use to paddle down rivers? What is a raft? So what does “that” refer to? Put the sentence into Chinese. 4. Ask the students to read the text once more and do Ex 2. in the post-reading. a. Get the students to read the text by themselves for several minutes to say about adventure travel according to the chart. Q: Which activity are you interested in? Please say something about your favourite activity. Step III. Ask the students to finish the task. Task: Make a decision on where to go Situation: Tomorrow there are two groups of teachers that will go to travel. One are going hiking, the other are going rafting. I don’t know which group that I will join. Will you help me? Ask each student to give one reason. Period 4: Integrating Skills Procedures: Step I. Lead in Show the students two pictures of one river in different period of time. Ask the students to do some research work on eco-travel. Task : To design an eco-travel Reference : Project on Wb. Period 5: Grammar Aims: 1. To enable the students to use the Present Continuous Tense for future actions. 2. To enable the students to learn useful expressions of good wishes. Aids: tape recorder Procedures: Step I. Listen to the dialogue and ask the students to get useful information 1. Choose the best answers they hear on the tape. Betty are off to Guangzhou next Thursday evening. Her brother Bob _____ Betty. Ask the students to discuss the following questions in pairs. On Saturday: 1. What’s the weather like today? 2. What are you doing now? 3. What did you do on Friday? 4. What is your travel plan tomorrow? 5. What are you the most interested in? Why? 6. What do you think of this trip? Step III. Check the answers to the questions. Step IV. Ask the students to finish the task. Make sure that the students can writ an English envelope and letter correctly. Envelope: Letter: Step V. Check each other’s writing after they finish it. Step VI. Show one of the students’ composition in front of class and correct it. Suggested answers to the discussed question in warming up : Picture 1, People like to go to different places to travel. As well known HongKong is the heaven of shopping, where we can enjoy varieties of goods. The convenience and modernity are what’s important for visitors. So I think it is a wise choice if visitors have holidays in big cities. Picture 3, I would like to visit the ancient cities and famous places of historic interests because in those places I can know much about the culture and history of our country. Visiting the places of historical interests is like reading a history book with vivid pictures and pieces of evidence. Picture 4. To my eyes climbing famous mountains is a god way of traveling. There are so many mountains in China, such as Huangshan, Lushan, Huashan and Hengshan. Going there, I can breathe in the fresh air of nature and see much greenness and I’ll feel refreshed and energetic. I’ll have a complete change of my state of mind. On the other hand, I may have a good chance to appreciate the wonders and miracles of nature and will love our country more. What’s the most important is that I will have feeling of success after climbing the top of the mountain. Summary: In my opinion people have their different choices, likes and dislikes. As long as they enjoy themselves or get something, they can go wherever they would like to go. |
