Part I Attributive Clause Review the grammar of attributive clause 定语从句 一.定义:在复合句中修饰句中的名词或代词的从句. The girl who lives next to me is Helen’s sister. Everything that he said was right. 二.先行词: 被定语从句所修饰的名词或代词. The man that sits on the bench sells vegetables. You must do everything that T do. 三.位置: 定语：限制或修饰名词或代词的成分. Red flag, my pen, beautiful flower 位置:单个单词作定语放在所修饰的词之前 短语或从句作定语则放在所修饰的词之后 my pen, red flag, a beautiful flower; the man in the shop, The student who studies in our university enjoys reading science stories. 四.引导词:引导定语从句的词,关系代词和关系副词.-----起着连接主从句的作用.同时又做句中的一个成分. The boy who we saw yesterday is John’s brother. The cat which is under the chair is called Mimi. 五.种类: 关系代词和关系副词 关系代词:that, which, who, whom whose, as 关系副词:when, where, why that:指物,也指人,在从句中做主语和宾语(做宾语时在口语或非正式文体中可省去) A plane is a machine that can fly. The comrade that is speaking at the meeting is a friend of mine. The noodles that I cooked were delicious. The man that we saw just now is from Beijing. which; 指物,只指物,在从句中做主语和宾语(做宾语时在口语或非正式文体中可省去) They planted some trees which don’t need much water. The fish which we bought this morning were not fresh. A dictionary is a book which gives the meaning of words. 3. who:指人,在从句中做主语 The boy who broke the window is called Mike. This is the stranger who saved the child’s life. The person to whom you just talked is Professor Wang. The lady whom we wanted to visit is a scientist. 5.whose: 指物,也指人,在从句中做定语(和它所修饰的名词在定语从句中做主语及动词或介词的宾语) The manager whose daughter is our classmate is coming to visit us. This is the room whose windows face south. He has written a book whose name I’ve forgotten. Do you know the girl whose seat you are sitting on? 6.when: 指时间,在从句中做时间状语(on/in which) October 1st, 1949 was the day when the People’s Republic of China was founded. I’ll never forget the day when I joined the army. 7.where: 指地点,在从句中做地点状语(in which) This is the place where Professor Li lives. I’d like to live in a house where there is plenty of sunshine. 8.why: 指原因,在从句中做原因状语(for which) The reason why he was late was that he misses his train. The reason why he failed in the match is not clear. 六:定语从句的注意事项: 在表示时间可用on/in which代替, 在表示地点可用 in which代替, 在表示原因可用 for which代替;若它们 引导的定语从句所修饰的名词在从句中做主语或宾语时,那么关系代词只能用 “that or which”. He came at a time at which we needed him most. This is the room in which I once worked. It is a day that(which) he would never forget . We shall never forget the days that we spent together. This is the place which I have long wanted to visit. This is an exhibition that has been visited by many foreigners. 限制性定语从句和非限制性定语从句 1)限制性定语从句:与主句关系密切,是先行词意义上不可缺少的定语,不可省去,若省去,主句的意思就不完整或失去意义. 2)非限制性定语从句: 与主句关系不密切起补充说明的作用,可省去,写时 用逗号隔开.(指物时只用 which, 不用that指物时只用who/whom,不用 that) He has found the book that he was looking for. Beijing is a city which hosted the 2008 Olympic Games. Beijing, which is the capital of China, has a very long history. Yesterday I met Helen, who seemed to be very worried. 3)从句与先行词的关系:即关系代词做从句主语时,人称和数受先行词的限制,时态则不受限制. The girls who are standing there are from Paris. The pencil which is lying on the desk is mine. 4)关系代词作从句的主语,从句的谓语动词与先行词一致的情况: (1)This is the girl who likes playing football. (2) He is one of the boys who love music. (3) He is the only one of the boys who loves music. 5)先行词是all, everything, nothing, anything, much, little, none, few等用that不用which. Everything that he said is unbelievable. Much that can be done is done. 6)先行词被最高级,序数词或被only, any, no, all, the very, the one，little, none, few等用that不用which. This is the best film that I have ever seen. That is the second dog that I have raised. It is the very book that I have been looking for. 7)先行词既有人又有物时, 用that而不用which/ who. The writer and his works that we like are there. 8)先行词被the same, such修饰时关系代词用“as”. Such boys as he said should be punished. This is the same room as Mary lives. 9)当主句是由who/whom/which引导的特殊疑问句时,为了避免重复只用“that”. Who is the boy that is reading in the library? Which is the university that we are going to enter? 10) 先行词在从句中做表语或关系代词在定语从句中做表语时用that. It was the dictionary that helped me a lot. It is no longer the case that she used to be. 11)as, which 引导的从句有时修饰的不是一个先行词,而是一个句子,这时就得用 as, or which 引导.两者的差别是:1.位置上:AS,可放在句首,也可放在句中或句末,而“WHICH”不能放在句首,可放在句中或句末.2.意义上“AS” 是“正如……所……, 这一点 ”而“WHICH” 则强调主句对从句造成的结果. 如:We can say: As we all know, Taiwan belongs to China. Taiwan, as/which we all know, belongs to China Taiwan belongs to China, as/which we all know. His mother planted a lot of vegetables and fruit in his backyard, which his family saved much money.
