Oprah Winfrey has succeeded in just about every media endeavor into which she places her efforts. Her nationally-syndicated talk show has been number one since its 1986 debut, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in 'The Color Purple,' and she has produced award-winning television specials.
Supermodels and Nobel prizewinners tend to travel in separate circles, but at a recent party held in honor of Oprah Winfrey in downtown Manhattan, both Toni Morrison and Cindy Crawford were in attendance. The gathering, held at a restaurant where it's difficult to get a reservation unless you call long in advance or are a recent recipient of an MTV Video Music Award, was a starry one. Mariah Carey. Barbara Walters. Maya Angelou. They were all there. Oprah worked the room, sh...
For every one of us that succeeds, it's because there's somebody there to show you the way out." ~ Oprah Winfrey
Responsible for leading the way for millions, talk-show host Oprah Gail Winfrey (1954-) was born on this date in Kosciusko, Mississippi.
This remarkable woman learned to read by three. By age six, she was in the third grade. Although her parents never married and did not stay together, Oprah has talked candidly about the experiences of her rocky childhood.
"Don't complain about what you don't have," she once advised. "Use what you've got. To do less than your best is a sin. Every single one of us has the power for greatness, because greatness is determined by service to yourself and to others."
Winfrey at 19 landed her first job as a reporter for a Nashville radio station. She enrolled in college and won beauty contests. She hosted her first TV show in 1984 and starred in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple in 1985. Oprah has not stopped since.
"I do not believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process," she admitted.
An advocate of empowerment and spirit, Winfrey's show is seen by millions throughout the world. Her fans celebrate her down-to-earth charm and trust her as a role model and source of inspiration.
"Doing the best at this moment," explained Winfrey, "puts you in the best place for the next moment." Every day, she finds ways to show others "the way out" and UP.

Oprah Winfrey is the highest paid entertainer in the world. Her net worth is estimated at more than $250 million. This figure includes her production company Harpo (Oprah spelled backwards).
As a child, Oprah moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then back to Nashville. She was crowned Miss Black Tennessee at the age of nineteen. After this accomplishment, Oprah went on to become the youngest and the first black to anchor news in Nashville, TN.
Later when she moved to Chicago, she hosted a talk show named "AM Chicago." After a year, the show became the number one talk show, outranking the Phil Donahue Show in 1984. The show was expanded to one hour and became known as the Oprah Winfrey Show. Her show reaches approximately 15 million viewers each day. Oprah branched out into the acting field in 1985 by starring in The Color Purple. She received an Oscar nomination for her role.
Oprah Winfrey
Entertainment Executive
Inducted into the Academy in 1989
Oprah Winfrey's public speaking career began in 1957, when she was less than four years old, touring the churches of Nashville, amazing congregations by reciting the sermons of James Weldon Johnson. Other children sang. Oprah talked. And she's still talking -- but to much larger audiences. The road from her grandmother's farm where she was raised in Koscuisko, Mississippi to an Academy Award nomination, numerous Emmy Awards, and making the Forbes list as one of the wealthiest women in America is a success story of focused determination. In a world gone mad with talk shows vying for viewers with inane topics bordering on the obscene, the Oprah Winfrey Show remains the classiest act of them all. But that's not too surprising since Oprah herself is such a class act. Taught to read by her grandmother at an age when most children are struggling to learn how to walk, Oprah became a voracious reader -- a habit she retains to this day. Books became her outlet to the world and the basis of her strong belief in a good education. A seeker of truth in herself and in others, Oprah's empathy, honesty, and love of people have made her one of the most beloved women in America; a close friend who visits over 20 million homes a day; a teacher who educates a rapt audience about subjects as varied as her own sexual abuse, divorce, children's issues, and countless other important subjects. An actress of uncommon talent, her first feature film, The Color Purple, got her an Academy Award nomination. Lucky? Oprah doesn't believe in luck. She believes "luck is preparation meeting opportunity." Her rise in the white, male-dominated media world from reading the news on a small radio station to being the first woman in history to own and produce her own television talk show goes against everything you hear about how nice people finish last. There is no one like her on television today.
