Teaching Procedures :
Step I . Greeting
T: Hello , boys and girls
Ss: Hello , teacher .
T: Sit down , please , Who is on duty today ?
S1: I am , Now I' ll give my duty report , ( --- )
T: Good , Sit down , please , Today we' ll have a new lesson , Lesson 17 . Unit 5. ( Write them on the blackboard . ) Before we learn the new lesson , Let' s first have a revision .
Step II . Revision
1. Check the homework exercises .
2. Revise the phrase " be made of " and the Infinitive to express purpose .
T: ( Show a picture on the screen . ) Look , This is a bridge , It was made many years ago , The workers used a lot of stones to make it , So we can say , " The bridge was made of stone , " OK ?
Ss: Yes .
T: Who can give some other examples , using this phrase ?
S2: I' ll try , " Our desks are made of wood , "
S3: " These bottles are made of glass "
T: Very good , Some other examples ?
S4: " My coat is made of cotton ."
T: I' m afraid you are wrong . You should say " My coat is made from cotton . "
( Bb : " be made of " and " be made from " )
( Then explain to the Ss the differences between the two phrases . )
T: OK, Now read these sentences and pay attention to the Infinitives in them .
( Show the sentences on the screen . )
1. He turned on TV to watch a football game. .
2. She went to the park to meet her boyfriend .
3. The woman came to the hospital to look ofter her sick child .
4. The student stood up to answer my question .
( Go over the sentences with the students and give the Chinese for each of them .)
T: We can see that the Infinitive in all these sentences express purpose . OK ?
Ss: Yes .
Step III . Presentation
T: I want to grow some flowers . What do I NEED ?
Ss: Soil , water , sun .
T: And also " seed " ,.( Write " seed " on the blackboard . ) Then what shall I do ? First I put some soil into a pot , Next I sow the seed in the soil , Then I water the seed , Now can you describe how I grow the flowers ?
Ss : First you put some soil , Next you sow the seed ---
T : Good Now look at the picture in your textbooks , The boy is Mic and the woman is his mother . They are talking about growing plants Let' s listen to the tape carefully . Don' t look at your books , ( Play the tape for the first time , ) What is Mick' s mother sowing ?
Ss : Cabbage seed .
( Play the tape for the second time .)
T: Please open your books and read after the tape .
Step . IV . Dialogue
T: Now I explain some language points in the dialogue , ( Show the following on the screen .)
1. cabbage seed: " seed " here is used as an uncountable noun.
(But: I love pumpkin seeds. Can you buy some more for me? )
2. so that = in order that
3. stop the soil (from) getting too dry
stop sb, (from) doing sth. 阻止某人做某事
e.g. The heavy rain stopped us (from) going out.
4. like you feed chickens = as you feed chickens
5. grow up ------- (of persons, animals) reach the stage of full development; become adult 长大,成人.
e.g. The boy is going to be a sailor when he grows up.
6. in fact ------ as a matter of fact 事实上
e.g. He pretended to be a doctor, In fact, he was a cheat
(Then let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs. Finally ask some pairs to act it out in front of the class.)
Step V. Practice
T: OK, Now deal with Part 2. First, you work alone, matching the questions and answers. Then work in pairs. Finally, I'll check the answers with the class.
Suggested answers:
1. Why do you sow cabbages?
To feed my family
2. Why do you put the box in the shade?
So that the sun won' t burn the little plants
3. Why do you water them?
To stop the soil getting too dry.
4. Why do you put this powder on them?
To make them grow big and strong.
Step VI. Language Study.
T: Let' s deal with Part 3. First read the sentences and put them into Chinese. then I'll tell you the usages of " so that “, (After a while teacher tells them that both the phrase " so that " and the Infinitive " to do " can be used to express purpose " so that " means " in order that “)
T: In the adverbial clause introduced by " so that “, the modal verbs " may, can, might, could " are often used, Look at examples, (Show the following on the screen.)
They set out early so that they might arrive in time.
= They set out early to arrive in time , ( 此时主从句主语相同)
Speak clearly so that everybody can
understand you ( 主从句主语不一致时不用不定式)
(Finally ask an individual student to tell the differences in the three sentences in the Ss ' books,
Water the plants so that they will grow (different subject)
Water the plants to make them grow (same subject)
Put the little plants in the shade so that the sun won' t burn them. (different subject ) )
T: Now I explain to you the differences between " so that " and " so --- that --- " " so --- that --- " introduces an adverbial clause expressing result , Chinese : " 太--- 以致于 --- " . Look at examples .
( Show them on the screen .)
The maths problem was so difficult that I couldn’t' t it out.
He ran so fast that he caught up with his classmates.

Step VII. Workbook
T: Now let' s do the exercises, Please turn to Page 77 First do Ex. 1. (Tell the Ss to work in pairs, one asks and the other answers, when answering the questions. they can use both " to do " or " so that ".)
Suggested answers:
1. To see his mother grow cabbages, / So that he could see his mother grow cabbages.
2. To feed the family, / So that she could feed the family.
3. To sow the seed. / So that she could sow the seed.
4. (Why did she keep the box in the shade?) To stop the sun burning the little plants. / So that the sun couldn’t' t burn the little plants.
5. To let them grow bigger. / So that they could grow bigger.
6. To stop the soil getting too dry. / So that the soil wouldn’t' t get too dry.
T: Let' s do Ex, 2. (Ask an individual student to tell the class the differences between " stop doing sth " and " stop to do sth. " Then tell the Ss to translate the sentences into Chinese Finally check the answers.)
Suggested answers:
1. 昨晚下了一场大雨。 天亮时雨停了。
2. 那男孩做了各种各样的动作使婴儿停止了哭闹。
3. 整个下午团员们都在忙着种树。 他们只停下来喝了点水。
4. 她正洗衣服的时候, 听到了一阵响声。她停下来抬头看, 只见一只猫跑出了房间。
5. 终于生活在山区附近的人们不再毁坏森林了。
6. 我们必须阻止他们再犯同样的错误。
7. 他一听见他父亲回来,就不看电视了。
