Lesson 25 Teaching Aims 1. Words and Phrases: Four skills: sound, while (n.) for a while 2. Everyday English: Were you in … at the time of … ? Sure I was. I’ll never forget that . What was it like? Very strange , It sounded like … . What happened next? Teaching Important Points: The use of four – skill words. Describe the sight and feeling briefly when an earthquake takes place, applying what we’ve learned about earthquakes . Teaching Difficult Points: The use of the verb “sound” Teaching Methods: Talking method, direct method and discussing method Teaching Aids: 1. a recorder 2. a slide projector and some slides Teaching Procedures: Step I. Greeting and Revision T: Good morning, everyone. Ss: Good morning, teacher. T: Sit down , please , In this lesson , we mainly have three tasks ,First , let’s check the homework exercises . Secondly, we’ll listen to a dialogue about an earthquake. At last we’ll do some exercises about the dialogue and Direct Speech and Indirect Speech. OK. First, let’s check the homework exercises. (Teacher begins to check the students’ homework.) Step II. Presentation T: Have you heard about an earthquake? Ss: Yes, I have. T: When did you hear about it? Sa: I saw it on TV Some days ago. T: Please tell me something about it Sa: It happened in an Asian country and caused three people to lose their lives and a lot of houses to fall down. T: I’m sorry to hear that .A big earthquake can cause even greater loss of lives, destroy houses and bridges, and cause fires. Today we are going to talk about an earthquake that happened in San Francisco in 1989. Please listen to the tape and pay attention to what happened in the earthquake. Let’s begin. Step III. Dialogue (Play the tape of Lesson 25) T: Now listen to the tape again. After that please answer the questions on the screen. You can prepare them in pairs. Then I’ll ask some students to answer them. (Play the tape again and show the sentences on the screen.) What are Carl and Wang Bing talking about? Where was Carl at the time of the earthquake? How did Carl feel when the earthquake was happening? Have you ever heard anything about earthquakes from your parents? Have you ever been in any of the earthquakes? Where and when? Have you ever heard of the big? Tang Shan earthquake in Hebei Province in 1976? Sb: They are talking about the earthquake. T: OK. The second question, where was … ? Sc: He was in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake. T: Is he right? Ss: Yes. T : Now the third question , “ How did Carl feel… ? ” Sd: He felt afraid. T: Yes, He felt a bit afraid. What about the fourth question? “ Have you ever heard … ? What … ? Se: Yes, I have. They told me that the house moved and some of the pictures and other things hanging on the wall fell off. Two bowls and some glasses fell of the table and broke. T : It’s terrible , isn’t it ? I hope all of the students in our class study hard now and will become scientists to forecast the earthquakes exactly in the future , Who will answer the fifth ? “ Have you ever been … ? “ Where and when ? ” Sf : Yes , I have I was in Kunming when the earthquake happened in a county of Yunnan Province , It was in April , 1993. T : Now the last question ,. “ Have you … ? ” Sa : Yes , I have . It was one of the worst earthquakes in the world . It destroyed the whole city and killed thousands of people . ( First , ask the students to answer the questions . one student , one question . Then ask two students to do it , one asks and one answers .) T : Now let’ s go over the text . Please look at the sentences on the screen. 1 . … what does “ quake “ mean , as in the word “ earthquake “ ? 2. as in the word = as it is in the word … shake : This can mean to move from side to side ( as in an earthquake ) or to tremble ( as we do when we are frightened ) . This is why Carl says the earth shakes , And so do you , if you’re afraid. 3. you see : used in speech when we explain something e.g. “ Why are you so late ? ” “Well , you see , the bus broke down..” 4. It sounded like a train that was going under my house. Sound : link .v. can be followed by a noun , adjective or a clause e. g . Does this sentence sound right ? Your idea sounds like a good one It sounds as if the government don’ t know what to do . 5. I was … floor move = I was in the kitchen ; I was cooking something , the floor moved and I felt it. 6. It was like being on a boat : I felt as if I were on a boat ) because of the movement from side to side.) Step IV . Practice ( Ss read the text aloud , then act it out in pairs .) T : Now let’s do Part 2 of Lesson 25 , Practice . This is pairwork . Please do it in pairs . Then check the answers ( on the screen ) ( While doing this , let the students correct any mistake that occurs each other . At last show the answers on the screen.) He said he was / had been in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake . He said he would never forget that / He said he would remember that for ever. He said it sounded / had sounded like a train. He said all the glasses fell / had fallen off his kitchen table . He said he had never been so afraid in all his life. He said he never wanted to be in another earthquake again . He said he was going to move another city the next month. Step V . Workbook T : Now turn to Page 87 . Let’ s do Ex. 2 Tell the main ideas of the dialogue in your own words . Prepare it yourself , then I’ ll ask some students to do it . ( After a moment Youn Li , you try . Suggested answer : Carl and Wang Bing are students . Wang Bing is reading a book about earthquakes . He asked Carl what “ quake “ meant in the word “ earthquake “ .Carl said it meant “ to shake “ , Wang Bing asked Carl if he was in San Francisco at the time of the big earthquake in 1989. Carl said that the was there when the earthquake was happening . Wang Bing asked Carl what the earthquake was like , Carl said that it sounded like a train that was going under his house . Wang Bing asked Carl what happened next . Carl said that the floor moved and the glasses on the table fell off noto the floor . Wang Bing asked Carl if he was afraid . Carl said that he was not very afraid and that it was that it was like being on a boat . He went on to tell Wang Bing that the earth shook for quite a while and that the house moved and a few pictures fell off the wall , but that was all . ( After the students have done it , the teacher says the following words . ) T : Now I’ ll show you some sentences on the screen . They are the answers to Ex. 3. But some of them are wrong , Please look at these sentences carefully , find the wrong ones , and then correct them . 1. She asked me to put some milk powder into the coffee. 她叫我往咖啡里放一些奶粉。 2. The teacher told them to mix the oil with vinegar and petrol . 老师告诉他们把油、 醋 和汽油混合起来。 3. The doctor said I should boil the water before I drink it . 医生说我应该把水烧开再喝。 4. S : Yes , I do , Sentence 5 should be : Mother told me not to sow the seeds when it was still very cold , Sentence 8 should be : The notice said that foreign company wanted to employ 85 workers . Sum up T : In this class we’ve learned a dialogue about an earthquake which happened in San Francisco in 1989. Now please find any information in the dialogue for the three topics : sight , hearing , feeling . ( Ask some students to find it and write it on the blackboard .) Step VII . Homework 1. Revise Lesson 25. 2. According to the following situation make up a dialogue , using the patterns below : Were you in … at the time of … What was it like ? It sounded like … What happened next ? Situation : A mother ( m ) is telling her child ( c ) what happened in the Tang shan Earthquake . Suggested modal : C: Mom , were you in Tangshan at the time of the big earthquake in 1976 ? M: No , but I could feel it and I will never forget it . C : What was it like ? M : It was a big earthquake , First I heard a noise , but I didn’t know what was happening . C : A noise ? M : Yes , It sounded like a train going under my house , C : What happened next ? M : I was in the bedroom and I feel the floor and the bed move . And them I watched all the glasses and bottles on the table fall off onto the floor . C : Were you afraid , Mom ? M : Yes , It was like being on a boat . The earth shook for quite a while . The house moved and a few pictures fell off the wall . Step VIII . The Design of the Writing on the Blackboard Lesson 25 A dialogue about an earthquake : Time : 1989 Place : San Francisco , the USA Sight : The glasses fell off onto the floor , The houses moved A few pictures fell off the wall . Hearing : There was noise that sounded like a train going under the house . Feeling : The floor moved and it was like being on a boat . He will never forget that . Step IX . Record after teaching |
