Lesson 26 Earthquakes
Teaching Aims :

Read the text “ Earthquakes “ . Learn some basic knowledge about earthquake and do the exercises to the text .
Teaching Important Points :
1. The use of four – skill words
2. Describe the sight and what he felt in an earthquake , using what we’ ve learned from the text .
Teaching Difficult Points :
When describing what we’ ve heard or seen , we should use the tenses and voices correctly . Whenever we want to describe what happened in the past , we should use past tense .
Teaching Methods :
Talking method , review method and inductive method .

Teaching Procedures :
Step I . Greeting and Revision .
T : Good morning , everyone .
Ss : Good morning , teacher .
T : In this class , first we’ ll check your homework . Then we’ ll learn the text . It’ s about earthquakes and the cause of the earthquake . At last we’ ll do exercises on Page 88 . Let’s begin . First , Let’ s check the homework . In the last period , I asked you to make a dialogue about Tangshan Earthquake . Have you finished it ? Who do it first ? OK. Wang Lin , you please …
( Revise the dialogue in SB , Lesson 25 . Part 1. Let several students act it out in pairs .)
Step II . Preparation for reading ;
T : Open your books . Turn to Page 26 . Look at the picture . What can you see ? What has happened ? Please read the passage , then answer the questions on the screen . The passage is about two earthquakes . (show the questions on the screen .)
1. In what part of the United States is San Francisco ?
2. In the spring of 1906, what happened to the city of San Francisco?
3. What happened again in the city in the fall of 1989.
4. In what other places of the world do earthquakes often happen ?
5. In what provinces in China do earthquakes happen more often?
6. Explain the reason why there are earthquakes.
Suggested answers to the questions above:
1. San Francisco is in the west part of the United States .
2. In the spring of 1906, a terrible earthquake happened to the city of San Francisco.
3. Another earthquake happened in the city of San Francisco in the fall of 1989.
4. Earthquakes often happen in West America near the sea .
5. In Yunnan and Qinghai Provinces earthquakes happen more often.
6. The outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates . They are moving slowly . But sometimes the plates stop and do not move for years . Then suddenly .they jump and an earthquake is felt .

Step III . Reading
( After the student reads the text , the teacher begins to deal with the Language points written on the screen.)
1. lost their homes : Their homes were destroyed .
2. second strangest : We use second ( third , etc ) + superlative when ranking things in order.
3. fell onto the one below = onto the road below . “ one “ ( its plural form is “ ones “ ) is used instead of a noun that means a single thing or person .
e.g. I don’ t like this watch . Show me a smaller one .
4. all over the city = in all areas of the city
5. The electricity was cut off for several days too .
Cut off : removed by cutting , stop sth .
e.g. She cut off a piece of bread and gave it to me .
They have cut off the water because they are repairing the pipes .
6. plate : a geographical term for the different sections of the earth’s surface
7. jump 5---6 metres to the north
jump : move suddenly .
T : Now please listen to the tape and read after it . ( After the Ss read it twice .)
T : Now please discuss the text in groups with your book closed , and fill as much as information in the following form .
( Write the form on the blackboard . Let the students do it in their exercise – books . At last , show the answers on the screen .)

Step IV . Reading aloud
T : Now open your books at Page 26 . Please read the last paragraph aloud together ( Read it twice ) This paragraph tells us the reason of the earthquake , Now turn to Page 88 . Let’ s do the exercises.
Step V . Workbook .
T : Look at Ex . 2. First , read the sentences and then translate them into Chinese. One student , one sentence . Who do the first one ? OK . Li Yan , do it please .
Suggested answers :
1. 本世纪以来, 旧金山至少发生过两次大地震。
2. 1906年的地震市内很大一部分地区被毁。
3. 地震之后, 二十五万多人无家可归。
4. 地震和地震以后引起的火灾使700人丧生。
5. 地震发生时有个人在一所房子旁的街道上行走, 他脚下的地面裂开了,他掉了进去,掉在了沙子上。

T : Now , look at these sentences and find out which sentences can not be changed into the Passive voice.
S : Sentences 1 and 5 can’t .
T : Do you know why ?
S : Because the main verbs in them are intranstive .
T : Is he right ?
Ss : Yes .
T : Now let’s change the other sentences into the Passive Voice , Please do them orally first .
( After that , let the students write their answers in the exercise – books . First check them in pairs . Then show the answers on the screen .)
T : Now , let’s check your answers . Li Ming , read the sentences on the screen.

Z. A great part of the city was destroyed by the quake in 1906.
3. More than 250.000 people’s homes were lost .after the earthquake .
4. 700 people were killed by the earthquake and the fires after it .

What should we do about the earthquake ? Next class we’ll study something about what we should do and what we should not do .
