Greeting: T: Good morning, everyone! Ss: Good morning, teacher! T: Sit down, please In this class, first we’ ll go over Checkpoint 7. Then we’ ll do listening. After that we’ ll go over practice and writing. At last we’ ll do Exercises on WB on Page 90. Do you understand? OK, Let’s begin. Step II. Checkpoint 7 T: Open your books, Turn to Page 28. Look at the useful expressions; now make sentences using the expressions given. Wang Ming and Li Fang, come to the blackboard. Please write your sentences on the Bb, The others write in your exercise books. When you have finished, we’ ll check them. (Check the Ss ‘ sentences on the Bb.) T: Close your books. Now. I’ ll ask you two questions. The first question is: In an attributive clause, when we talk about people. What relative pronouns should we use? Ss: We use who / whom / that. T: The second question is: What relative pronouns should we use when we talk about things? Ss: We use that / which. T: Good, Now please open your books. Look at Checkpoint 7. Grammar on Page 28. (Deal with the Grammar – the Attributive Clause) Step III. Listening. T: Now please open your books at Page 133. Look at the exercises. After you finish reading. We’ ll listen to a story. It is also about a man who was in the earthquake in 1989. Listening Text: Part 1 I shall never forget the day when the earthquake took place, the time was 5:15 in the afternoon and I was driving along the road to fetch my daughter from school. Our plan was to go swimming together. I had finished work at about 4. o’ c lock and then gone to the Post office. Then I ‘ d stopped off at a shop in order to get some fresh fruit. We like to have some fruit .to eat after our swim. I was driving along a high road on my way to the school. Over my road was another road for cars coming the other way. I was hungry so I put the bag of apples on the seat beside me and started to eat one. Part 2. I found myself in the dark. I couldn’t’ t move. The bottom parts of both my legs and my feet were hurting badly and I couldn’t’ t move them. All around me was quiet. But below me I could hear shouts and a lot of noise. Them I remembered what had happened. I had been in an earthquake. For about two hours nobody came. Luckily I could reach the bag of apples. So at least I had plenty to eat. Then I heard people climbing towards me. A team of people had come to see if anyone was under the broken road. I called out “ I ‘ m here! “ I heard a shout, Soon a stranger climbed to the side of the bridge near my car. “ How are you doing?“ he asked. “ Not too bad, “ I said, “ but my feet and legs feel as if they’ re broken “ “ We’ ll have you out of there just as soon as we can , “ he said . They didn’ t get me out until the next morning. I had been in my car for fourteen hours Suggested answers: Ex. 1. 1. 5: 15 p.m. 2. To his daughter’ s school 3. Change the sentences, putting the verbs into the Passive Voice after the example, first we’ ll do it orally, Then write the sentences in your exercise book, At last, we’ ll check the answers. Who will do the first one? S: Let me have a try. … (Show the suggested answers on the screen.) Suggested answers: 1. A lot of buildings were destroyed by the earthquake. 2. Over 100 people were killed 3. A lot of money will be spent on new buildings . 4. That bookstore will be closed, as the building isn’ t strong enough. 5. Perhaps the city will soon hit (soon) by another earthquake. Step V. Writing T; Look at Part 3. please. Imagine you have been in an earthquake before. First write the answers to these questions. Then use your sentences to write a passage called: “ The Earthquake “. Please write in your exercise books. When you ‘ve finished, change your writing with your partner and point out each other’s mistakes if there are any. Suggested answers: 1. It happened on April 17, 1985. 2. No, I had not. 3. I was at home. 4. I was sleeping in my bed. 5. An earthquake hit my hometown. 6. I was frightened at that time. 7. Yes, but only a few, An Earthquake On April 17, 1985, my hometown was hit by an earthquake when I was five years old. It happened at midnight. I was sleeping in my bed at that time when a very loud noise woke me up. I felt my bed shaking and I Thought I was dreaming. But my mother ran into my room and pulled me out of bed. We rushed out; luckily nobody in my family was hurt. I had never been in an earthquake before. So it was the first time I met an earthquake. I was very frightened. Later, my father told me that my neighbour’ s water pipe was broken and some weak houses in the village fell down. However, only a few villagers were hurt. Step VI. Workbook T: Now please turn to Page 90. Let ‘ s do Ex. 1. First write your answers in your exercise book. Then check it in pairs. At last I‘ ll show the answers on the screen. (After the Ss check their answers in pairs, show them on the screen.) 1. San Francisco which / that lies in the west of the States very near the Pacific is a big city. 2. Read the following passage and point out its main idea. Suggested answer: B T: This story tells us about a naughty boy. He isn’ t interested in studying. However, he is afraid of his father. This time what will happen to him? Please read the story and then tell us the answer. Suggested answer: D Step VII. Sum up T: In this unit, we ‘ ve learned something about earthquakes, in this class; we’ ve done some exercises, and listened to two paragraphs. Have you any questions?
