英国诗歌和成语中经常押头韵（alliteration），所谓“头韵”是指一连使用两个或更多个以同一字母或同一发音开头的单词。例如：Round the rocks runs the river.
Safe and sound就是一个押头韵的英语成语，意思是“安然无恙”。Sound作形容词用，解释为“完好的，健全的，无恙的，无损的”，例如：The surveyor reported that all the walls were completely sound.（房产检视员报告说所有的墙壁都完好无损。）Safe也有“没有受到损害的、无恙的，平安的”意思，safe和sound这两个词的意思其实有些重叠，不过，人们为了押头韵，也不介意语意重复了。
这个成语在很多场合都适用。
例如：
The fragile china survived the bumpy journey safe and sound.
那批易碎的瓷器经过颠簸的旅途而完好无损。
She was overjoyed when the police restored the child to her safe and sound.
警察把孩子毛发无损的交还给她，使她高兴得不得了。
