need可用作名词、情态动词和实义动词,现就其用法归纳如下:
一、用作名词
need用作名词时,意为"需要,必要",有单、复数形式。如:
There is not enough fresh water for our needs. 没有足够的水满足我们的需要。
二、用作情态动词
need用作情态动词时,没有人称和数的变化,后接动词原形。多用在否定句和疑问句中,其否定形式在need后加not,疑问形式将need提到句首。肯定回答为:Yes,...must.否定回答为:No,...needn't. 如:
You needn't answer this question.
-Need he go home now?
-Yes, he must. / No, he needn't.
三、用作实义动词
need用作实义动词时,在使用时应注意以下几点:
1. 用作及物动词,后接名词或代词。如:
This book is useless. I don't need it. 这本书没有用。我不需要它。
2. 用作及物动词,后接不定式。如:
Does he need to come here? 他需要来这儿吗?
I need you to help me. 我需要你帮助我。
3. 用作及物动词,后接动名词,表示被动意义。
There is something wrong with this watch. It needs mending. 这块手表有毛病。它需要修理。
