Teaching goals:
a. Introduce some freedom fighters who inspired admiration and respect.
b. Encourage the student to make persistent effort and sacrifices to realize their goals.
c. Help the students form correct attitudes towards the minority ethnic group.
d. Practice talking about freedom fighters and their opinions.
e. Practice talking about causes and effects.
Teaching aids: a laptop computer, a recorder and two handouts
Step 1 Lead-in
(Play the song SUPER STAR )
T: What’s the name of the song we heard just then?
Ss: SUPER SATR
T: Today I would introduce to you some super stars. Let’s see who they are. (Show the pictures of Nelson Mandela,Air Jordon, Oprah Winfrey and Condoleezza Rice ) Do they have anything in common? What is their skin color? Do you think Do you think black people now have equal rights as white people? Has the situation improved? What about in the past? How were blacks treated in history?
Ss: --- Not treated as human beings
--- Made to do much work without pay
--- Separated from their family, traded and shipped to other places
T: Great changes have taken place. But, who made the changes possible?
Ss: Abraham Lincoln , Martin Luther King Jr…
T: We can use a word to describe / define all these people: Freedom

1.Brainstorming
T: If you were a freedom fighter, what would you do to help the blacks?
(Organize peaceful actions or use violence)
2.Pair work (Facts about freedom fighters)
T: Complete the chart, following the instructions on the paper. Hand it in after class.

4. Discussion
1. Show segments of Martin Luther King Jr.’s family life.
2. Discussion: Would you give up your family and even your life for the benefit of others? Is it worth doing so? Why do you think so?
T: Do you want help from others when in danger? Would you feel comfortable and happy when you see others suffer? It takes a strong man to save himself, and a great man to save another. But it would be better if we could save both others and ourselves.
5. A song (John Brown’s Body)
T: Without doubt, the heroes had made great contributions to the society and history will not forget these. In fact people created a song for John Brown. Let’s listen and sing along if you could.
6. Discussion : attitudes towards the minority ethnic group
Questions:
1). How many nationalities are there in China?
2) .Are people from minority ethnic groups as intelligent as the Han Nationality?
3) What kind of attitude should we hold towards them and their customs?
Suggested answers:
1) .They are backward in many aspects due to historical reasons, but that does not mean they are as intelligent as we are. In fact, they are very good in singing and dancing. (Show pictures of Cheng ji si han, Song zuying, Ynag Liping etc.)
2). All men are born equal. They should have equal rights and their customs should be respected.
3) As we are a member of the Chinese nationality, we should help each other.

2.Sentence making
1). 首先一个禁止帮助逃跑奴隶的法律已被通过。(What happened first was that + sentence)
2). 由于他的粗心导致了车祸(…happened as a result of + n. )
3). 你成为英语老师不是不可想象的,因为一切皆有可能。(You could expect + sb / sb’s doing sth /n. / sentence + because…)
4). 这导致了美国的独立(That led to sb / sb’s doing sth / sth. )
5). 恐龙灭绝的一个原因是它们不能适应环境的变化(One of the reasons why…is that + sentence)
6). 成功总是尾随失败而来(…is often followed by …)
Homework
1. Correct your classmates’ homework (sentence making) and hand it in tomorrow
2. Preview the reading material on page28 and finish the post-reading exercise.
教学后记
一.这堂课的优点:
1. 关于对人物的生平了解,使用了通过对话获取信息和填写表格的形式,具有信息差,较能保证人人参与,又能同时锻炼听说读写能力。
2. 资料搜集得比较完整,内容丰富,并使用了多种媒体。
3. 课件有自己的风格,比较美观。
4. 有一定的教育意义。
二.这堂课的缺点:
1. 各个环节的组织不够好,感觉重点不够突出,有堆砌感。
2. 在对话课中用language study 的形式来操练句型的方法值得商榷。
3. 课件出现个别用法描述不够完整。如:You could expect + sb / sb’s doing sth /n. / sentence + because…,其实也可以说:You could expect sb. to do sth. because…
4. 学生做pair work的卡片上活动指令不够清晰。现改进如下:
