A Useful expressions
1 make sb do sth / sb is (was) made to do sth
Chen Jingrun had worked on the maths problems all day and all night, so his doctor and his wife decided to make him rest for some time eacn day. = Chen Jingrun …night, …decided to force him to rest …
The slave was made to work twelve hours a day. = The slave was forced to work twelve hours a day.
2 fight for / agaist sth / sb
The slaves fought hard against slavery for their freedom.
It is 10,000 dollars that the competitors are fighting against each other for.
3 no more than: only
not more than: 不超过
500 people were supposed to attend the conference, but there were no more than 300 of them when it started.= …but there were only 300 people of them …
He is no more than a child. = He is only a child.
4 call for sth: 为获得…而呼吁;需要… call for sb: 去…家取某物或与其一同去某地 / 约请
The situation in Russia calls for a strong leader. = The situation in Russia needs a strong leader.
Poor city people call for lower prices for necessaries(生活必需品)。
I’ll call for you at three o’clock to the theatre.
5 break away from…
There is a story which says Taiwan Island broke away from the mainland millions of years ago.
The country’s intention(意图)of making Tibet break away from China angered every Chinese.
6 a car / house of his own = his own car / house
7 in all: altogether 总共（与数量结构一起连用）
1,000 people in all attended the conference. = Altogether 1,000 people attended the conference.
8 spare time: time when one is free
Tom spends all his spare time with his girlfriend.
9 a war / a flood / an earthquake / a fire / a volcano… break out
break out 不用于被动语态，它是不及物动词短语。
Many earthquakes broke out in Los Angelos.
10 beat sb to death
For stealing only a loaf of bread from the store, the black was beaten to death by the white storekeeper.
11 set sb free
The bird has been caged for days, and it looks so lonely. Could you set it free?
The PLA will set all the war prisoners free.
12 consider sth / sb as sth / sb
He’s considered as the best dancer. = He is considered to be the best dancer. = He is thought to be the best dancer.
13 join up
The two classes will join up to hold a Christmas party. = The two classes will hold a Christmas party together.
