A. Useful expressions:
1. complete vt. complete adj. completely adv.
How long will it take you to complete the trip?
*When will the bridge be complete/completed?
2. make/take a trip/journey
How many of you are making the trip?
trip ─ a short journey and visit from and returning to a particular place
指短期的旅程和观光, 从某地出发再回到某地
journey ─ it may indicate a long distance or a short one travelled regularly
可指经常走过的或长或短的距离
travels ─ it suggests a fairly long period of travelling from place to place,
especially abroad, for pleasure or interest 指时间稍常的各处旅行,
tour ─ a (short or long) journey for pleasure, spent visiting several places
为游玩而到几个地方观光的(长途或短途)旅行
3. four of us 我们中的四个人
How many of you are making the trip? There are four of us.
4. collect/raise money 筹款
We're trying to collect money for a wildlife project.
5. put on performances
They often go to the country areas to put on peformances for the farmers.
6. at present = now
At present there are not many milu deer in nature parks in China, ...
*Those who were present at the meeting all thought my idea a good one.
7. year by year 逐年地, 年复一年
They liked the cool wet weather there and their number increased year by year.
8. return to * return sth to
The milu deer has returned to China.
We're trying to return the milu deer to the wild.
9. south of Beijing = to the south of Beijing
The Nanhaizi Milu Park is about 20 km (to the) south of Beijing.
10. one day = at a particular time in the future; 将来某一天
At all these centres it is hoped that one day they will have enough animals to
set them free ...
some day = at some time in the future
11. alive adj. living adj. live adj.
Until recently, the only milu alive in the world belonged to the Duke of Bed
ford in England.
*Until recently, the only living milu in the world belonged to ...
We were glad to find the old man was still alive, happy and healthy.
Live fish are very expensive.
12. one after another 一个接一个
Research centres are set up one after another.
B. Sentence patterns:
1. the Passive voice in the present continuous tense
The life of the milu is being studied at present.
More milu deer are being moved to a new large nature park.
