Unit 4 A Garden of Poems The Sixth Period: Exercises Teaching material: Unit 4 A garden of poems Lesson type: Exercises Teacher: Wang Yu Teaching Aids: Slide Teaching Aims: 1. Consolidation. 2. Learn some new words and phrases. 3. Poetry reading competition: train the students to enjoy the English poems. Teaching Difficult Points: 1. The usage of the useful words and phrases. 2. How to enjoy English poems. Teaching Methods: 1. Analyzing method to get the students to master the words and phrases. 2. Practice method to get the students to master what they’ve learned. Teaching procedure: Step I Lead-in (1 minute) T: Class begins! Good morning, girls! S: Good morning, teacher! T: Sit down, please! Today we’re going to have an English poetry reading competition. But before the competition, we’ll check the exercise first, ok? S: Ok. Step Ⅱ Exercises (20 minutes) T: Good! Will you please turn to page 103 and look at exercise 1. Change the words below into nouns by adding a suffix. Here “suffix” means”后缀”。 （Explain the words one by one and check the answers） T: Now let’s look at exercise 2. Who’d like to read your answer? (Explain the words one by one and check the answers ) T: Look at the second line. We’ve learnt the phrase “go through”, right? It means read quickly. But here it means “experience”. E.g. 他们都经历过这场战事. S: They have all gone through the war. T: Good. Now let’s see the fourth line. A higher quality of life. What does “quality” here means? S: 质量 T: Then how to say”优质产品”? S: Products of quality. T: Right! Very good. So this sentence means”诗歌为人类提供了更高的生活质量.” Now let’s move on. Look at the sentence:” What sets them apart is that they are very skilled at playing with words and can put words together in amazing ways.” Here “set apart” means"把……分开”. “set apart” has another meaning. "留出，拨出”. E.g.拨出金额买新设备. S: Set apart a sum of money for new equipment. T: Well. What about the phrase “be skilled at”? S: Be good at. T: That’s right! We can say be skilled at writing or be skilled at painting. Be skilled at doing sth. Clear? S: Yes. T: Have you got any other questions about this passage? S: No. T: Ok. Now let’s look at exercise 3. Translate the following sentences into English, using the words in brackets. (Check the answers using slides and explain some language points) 1. 溜走 2. 滑倒 e.g., 在冰上滑倒 slip over the ice ▲ Intention of doing sth. 做某事的意图 ▲ Recommend sb. For the job. 推荐某人工作 StepⅢ Poetry Reading Competition.
