1. It consists of millions of pages of data. 它是由几百万页数据资料组成的。
consist of 由......组成；由......构成 例如：
This club consists of more than 200 members. 这个俱乐部由200位以上的委员构成。
2. In 1969, DARPA, a US defense organization, developed a way for all their computers to talk to each other through the telephone.
在1969年，DARPA，一个美国的防御组织，开发出了一种办法，让所有他们的电脑可以通过电话来进行"交谈"。
句中DARPA与a US defense organization 是同位语关系，后者对前者进一步解释说明。例如：
Lu Xun, a great Chinese writer, is respected by all the Chinese. 鲁迅，一位伟大的中国作家，受到所有中国人的尊敬。
3. It then became possible for universities to use the system as well. 后来大学使用这种系统也成为可能。
It +be / become +adj. +for sb. / sth. to do sth. It 是形式主语，代替for sb. / sth. to do sth.部分，其中的形容词常有：important, necessary, possible, impossible, unusual, popular, natural...等。这类形容词是对it 进行描述, 不是对sb. 描述。例如：
It is important for the students to learn English well.
It is necessary for him to remember as many as English words.
注意：It + be + adj.+ of sb. to do sth.
在该句型中的形容词为：kind, polite, friendly, foolish, cruel等。这类形容词是一些描述句中sb. 的形容词。例如：
It is kind of you to help me.
It is polite of students to say hello to their teachers.
4. The World Wide Web (the web) is a computer network that allows computer users to access information from millions of websites via the Internet.
广域网（the World Wide Web）是一种电脑网络，它允许电脑使用者通过因特网来读取众多网站上的信息。
allow vt. 允许 allow sb. to do, allow doing, 不可用 allow to do 例如：
They allowed the children to go into the park for free. 他们允许孩子们免费进入公园。
Smoking is not allowed here. 这儿禁止吸烟。
The police do not allow playing football in the street. 警察不允许在街道上踢足球。
5. The World Wide Web was invented in 1991 by an English scientist. 广域网是由一名英国科学家于1991年发明创造的。
辨析: invent与discover
invent vt. ① 发明②编造；虚构
discover vt. ①发现（指发现事物的客观存在）②察觉；发觉。例如：
Edison invented the electric light lamp. 爱迪生发明了电灯泡。
Columbus discovered America in 1492. 哥伦布在1492年发现了美洲大陆。
