Lesson 74 Martin Luther King Jr. (1)


Teaching aims:
1. Learn and master the following:

2. Train and improve the students’ reading ability.

Step 2. Revision & Lead-in
T: Yesterday / Last week we learned a dialogue. Now I want to know why one of the person was in prison.
Ss: Because he joined a big civil rights march.
T: Why was there the big civil right march?
Ss: Because the black people were not treated as equal citizens. They wanted the same rights as the white people.
T: Who led the march?
S: Martin Luther King, Jr.
T: Yes. It was Martin Luther King, Jr. who led the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham. Today we’re going to read a text about King’s life and the American black people. Before learning the text, let’s do some vocabulary work.
Vocabulary work (1)
1. achieve – to succeed in doing something good, usually by working hard
2. entrance – a door or other opening which you use to enter a building or place
3. liberate – to help someone or something to be free
4. separation – when people or things are separate or become separate from other people or things
Vocabulary work (2)
1. childhood – the part of your life when you are a child
2. equally – to the same degree or level; into amounts or parts that are the same size
3. marriage – the legal relationship of a man and a woman being a husband and a wife
4. slavery – the system of owning slaves, or the condition of being a slave
Vocabulary work (3)
1. deliver – to take things such as letters, parcels, or goods to a person or place
2. explode – to break suddenly from inside with noise and force; to suddenly start shouting because you are very angry
3. murder – to kill someone intentionally and illegally
4. success – something that has a good result or that is very popular; when one achieves what he / she wants to achieve
Vocabulary work (4)
1. educate – to teach someone at a school or college
2. freedom – the right to live in the way you want, say what you think, and make your own decisions without being controlled by anyone else
3. organization – an official group of people who work together for the same purpose
4. tennis – a sport in which two or four people hit a small ball to each other over a net
T: Now please look at the screen. Let’s do some exercises of derivative. You are given two minutes to get ready for them. Then I’ll ask some of you to say the answers. OK?

T: Now, we should know some rules of word formation, especially the use of some suffixes (后缀), which can change the parts of speech of the words, such as, -tion, -ful, -ly, -th, -age, -ing. We should also know ‘-or’ or ‘er’ can be added to the end of some verbs to form nouns referring to people. [The suffix ‘-ar’ is also added to the end of a few verbs, two of which are ‘lie’ and ‘beg’. They are ‘liar’ and ‘beggar’.
Step 4. Reading
T: All right. Turn to Page 38.Look at the text. You are given four minutes to read the passage quickly and silently. Try to get the answer to the question — which group of people did King support, and how much success did he have?
S: King supported black people. He had a lot of success, for example, he won them the right to vote.
T: Very good. Thank you. Sit down, please. Next. I’ll give you another four minutes to read the text again. This time, you should pay more attention to the detailed information about King’s life then finish Part 2. First read the passage alone, then work in pairs. Finally some pairs will be asked to ask and answer the questions. Are you clear?
Suggested answers:
1. — Where was King born?
— King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in
the southeast of the US.
2. — Where did he go to college?
— He went to college in one of the
northern states.
3. — What was his job after college?
— He because a minister in the church
after college.
4. — What was the situation like in the

5. — Did King believe that it was necessary
to fight and kill to win civil rights?
— No, he didn’t.

— He was murdered.
T: OK. Now you are familiar with the text. Maybe some sentences are hard to understand. Let me give you some explanations. Look at the screen.
Words and Phrases:
1. set an example to sb. / set sb. an example e.g.
The headmaster likes to arrive early at school to set (the other teachers) an example.
Lei Feng set a good example to us.
2. forbid (forbade, forbidden) vt. e.g.
Uncle Wang has been strictly forbidden to smoke or drink.
She says that her mother has forbidden her to read such cartoon books.
Smoking is now forbidden in many public places.
3. section n. a part of place e.g.
In the middle of the town there is a business section.
This section of the office is used for record keeping.
4. separate v.& adj. separation n.
separate adj. eg.
I must have a separate room.
The children sleep in separate beds.

Let’s separate the good ones from the bad ones.
The Yangtze River separates Hankou and Wuchang.
5. mixed race marriages = marriages between blacks and whites
6. a reading test = an exam to see if the person could read
Sentences:
1. The money spent on educating a black child was just one fourth of that spent on each white child.
= The money that was spent on educating a black child was just one fourth of the money that was spent on educating a white child.
2. If they wish to, they had to pass a reading test.
= If they wish to vote, they had to pass a reading test. e.g.
You can do it if you wish to (do it.)
Step 5. Reading aloud and Consolidation
T: Now I’ll play the tape of the passage. For the first time, you should listen carefully. For the second time, you can listen and follow in a low voice. At the same time, try to remember some information. Then we’ll do an exercise.
(After a while, the teacher shows the following on the screen and then checks the answers.)

T: OK. Thank you. And you can exchange roles to ask and answer. Do you understand?

T: All right. Now please work in pairs, then I’ll check the answers with the whole class.

T: Now look at Part 5.
(Teacher reads the instruction aloud first and then says the following.)
T: Before the interview, you should complete the questions individually first. And then work in pairs according to the questions and the information you’ve learnt about King in the text. Of course, one of you plays the role of a television reporter, the other plays the role of Martin Luther King, Jr. You are given three minutes to practise freely. Remember to exchange roles to practise. After a while, I’ll ask one pair to act out your dialogue in front of the class. Do you understand?

Step 9. Summary
T: OK. That’s all for the practice. Now, let’s look back over what we’ve learnt in this lesson. First, we had a revision of last lesson. Then we read and learned the text about King’s life. From the text, we’ve learnt three things:
1) The situation for the black people at
that time;
2) Martin Luther King’s belief;
3) Martin Luther King’s success.
Meanwhile, we also learned some
useful words and phrases and sentence
patterns. (Point to the contents on the
blackboard and read them aloud one by
one.) At last, we did some exercises
about the text.
Now homework for you:
1. Read the text more times and practise making sentences using the useful words and phrases we’ve learnt in this unit.
