Try to act out the given situation Procedures Step 1:Warming up by a free talk about mysterious things around the situations Are you interested in mysterious things ? What can be called a mystery ? Can you give some examples? Warming up by a discussion Please turn to page 109.Look at the pictures. 1. What do you think the pictures are about? 2. What is happening in each of the pictures ?Describe the people and events. (These pictures tell readers a story .It is a detective mystery about the theft of a diamond from a shrine in India. Wilkie Collins was one of the first writers of detective novels. In 1868 he published The Moonstone . The picture on page 109 show scenes from the novel ) Step 2 : speaking Learn the sentences to express: to ask for /give/ accept/ refuse advice and suggestions Ask for advice: What shall we do ? Can’t we put in …? Should we put in ? Give advice: Wouldn’t it be better if …? You had better do ….? Let’s put in …. What about doing …? Accept advice: Thank you ! Today we are going to learn about The Moonstone written by the famous writer Wilkie . First go to the vocabulary list for this unit. Read it and look into the word formation of each word. 2.Can you name some famous detective story writer? Margery ASlllingham Percival Christopher 3. Do youy know anything about Wilkie ? Wilkie was born in London on January 8,1824, the oldest son of a fashionable artist.He was named after Sir David wilkie , a friend of the family. After an early career in business, he studied law and was admitted to the bar, though he apparently never practiced. He also tried his hand at painting , and wrote many articles and stories that were published anonymously. In 1851,he was introduced to Charles Dickens by a mutual friend. The two formed a lasting friendship, and worked together on Dickens magazines. Step2 Reading and underlining 1. Fast reading Now let’s come to the text The Moonstone. Read the text fast and answer the following questions. 1) When and where was the story set ? 2) What is the most splendid gift to Rachel at her birthday party? 3) What is Godfrey? 4) Who is the detective in the story? 2. This morning we are going to read and write! First read aloud to the recording of the text on page 115.Pay attention to the pauses, the pronunciation while reading aloud. Step2:Answering the following questions 1. who did the detective suspect? 2. Why didn’t Rachel answer Sergeant Cuff’s question ? 3. Why didn’t Franklin remember taking the diamond? 4. Who do you think was guilty? 5. what clues can you find? Step3:copying down expressing As is known .language is made up of words and expressions. So , why not read the articles and write down all those expressions which are useful top you? Step 4: Write a letter 1. Study the two situations on page 117 and tell about the different styles of letters The letter from Rosanna to Franklin is an informal letter, while the letyter from Sergeant Cuff to Rachel is a formal one. 1) When the letter starts Dear sir we end it with Yours sincercely 2)You can end a letter to someone you know with Best wishes. 3)The first paragraph of the letter should explain your reasons for writing. 4)You should leave a space between each paragraph. 5)Ms is the title used for a married woman. 3.Here’s one way from top to bottom 1)address of the writer 2) date 3) address where the letter being sent to 4) name of recipient 5) body paragraphs 6) ending sentences 7) your name 8) your signature |
