Unit 6 Reading
Teaching aims:
1. To get students to learn about the major trends in modern society and get them to think about or imagine the future developments of the world and the possible life styles in the future.
2. To improve students’ ability of reading comprehension.
3. To make students practice skimming and scanning skills while reading.
4. To make students practice writing ability.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Introduction
Step 2: Pre-reading
Ask the students to scan the passage and find out in which paragraph they can find answers to the questions.
1. How will people shop in the future?
2. How will people travel in the future?
3. What will schools be like in the future?
4. What will the human body be like in the future?
5. What will the future be like in general?
Step 3 Listening (T/F)
1. It is impossible to make forecasts about future developments. (F)
2. The maglev train travels at an amazing 430 km/m. (F)
3. People can combine shopping with fun in the future. (T)
4. Smallpox cannot be defeated. (F)
5. We are sure that our efforts to improve the world will be successful. (T)
Step 4 Careful reading
Para. 1 What is the way to catch a glimpse of the future?
Para. 2 (1) There will be a new kind of train called maglev train.
(2) Can you describe the new maglev train?
Para. 3 Why will people malls?
Para. 4 Will it be possible for people to be healthier in the future?

Step 5 Further discussion
You want your child to go to a real school, but your child prefers an e-school. Make up a dialogue between you & your child to persuade each other to reach an agreement.
