英语(新标准)高一年级第四册 Module 6 Unexplained Mysteries of the Natural World Cultural Corner: The Universal Dragon Teaching Plan for Module 6 Cultural Corner I. Teaching Aims: a. New words: generous, unpredictable, emperor, robe, reputation, border, positive, indicate, identity, myth, fortune b. Enable the students to understand and use the new phrases: due to, according to c. Inspire the students to be proud of our motherland as a nation of dragon. II Key points and difficulties: Key points: reading comprehension and new language points Difficulties: reading comprehension III Teaching Aids: multi-media IV Teaching Methods: communicative and task-based learning V Teaching Procedures: Step 1: Warmer A one-minute speech competition. Ask two students to represent their own group and talk about the given topic “China” continuously for one minute. The other students will judge which group is better and thus is the winner group. Step 2: Revision Show 5 photos on the screen to the students and ask them to talk about possibilities using must, may, might, or can’t. (For example: This picture may be taken on the beach.) Step 3: Presentation Teacher: Do you know how to say “龙” in English? Students: Dragon. Teacher: What do you think of the dragon? A good animal or a bad one? Students: A good animal, as we Chinese people are descendents of the dragon. Teacher: In Chinese language we also have many idioms that indicate the dragon is a good and popular animal, such as “dragons rising and tigers leaping”(龙腾虎跃) “like dragons flying and phoenixes dancing”(龙飞凤舞). Do you have more examples? (Free talk) Teacher: Do you think there is dragon only in China? (Present the two pictures on the text on the screen) Here are two pictures of dragon,, can you tell me the differences between them? (head, claw, tail) Say which one do you like better and why? (Free talk) Teacher: Yes, the red dragon belongs to the west, which may not be so good in people’s mind as in China. So let’s read the passage and find more about dragon in different parts of the world, as we call it “The Universal Dragon”. Step 4: Reading The given task: Fill in two forms about those differences as well as the origin or background for that. (On the Students’ Paper) Then check the answers together. A. Fill in the blanks with proper prepositions. (On the Students’ Paper) B. Find out the phrases in the passage. (On the Students’ Paper) C. Study the new points. (On the Students’ Paper) Step 6: Practice & Consolidation A debate: Is dragon good or bad? Divide the class into two groups and each group holds one side. What’s the difference in dragon between Chinese culture and western culture? In Chinese culture Dragons are generous and wise , although they can be unpredictable. The dragon was closely connected to the royal family. If you were born in the year of dragon, you are intelligent, brave and a natural leader. In western culture Dragons had a different reputation. In the story, the dragon is dangerous. However, in Wales, the red dragon which appears on the Welsh flag is a positive symbol, indicating strength and a sense of national identityy. b. Why should the dragon have a different character in different parts of the world? In Chinese culture The idea of the dragon may have come from the alligator---a shy animal which lives in rivers, but which is usually only seen when there is plenty of water---a good sign for agriculture. In western culture The idea of the dragon probably came from the snake--- an animal which people hated and were afraid of. II Language Study A. Fill in the blanks with prepositions. 1.
