Presentation SBPage37, Part1.Say to the students in this unit we’re going to learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. He and many other people are on a march. Write the words ‘march, demand, civil rights, join in, prison’ on the blackboard. Get the students to read the dialogue quickly and give the answer. Step 3. Reading Ask students: Why is one of the men in prison? He joined in a civil rights march; the police said that the march was forbidden and put him in prison. Where did the march take place? What kind of a march was it? Can black people in Birmingham go to all public places in the city? What kind of places can’t they go to? Who stopped the march? What did they do to the marchers? Step 4. Dialogue Play the tape for the students to listen and follow. Then show the language points: 1. join = become a member of / take part in He joined the party in 1949. Do you know how many people joined the organization? 2. join in = join sb. in sth. Come along, and join the ball game. About 8,000 workers joined the strike in the city. All the managers joined in the discussion. The whole school will join in the concert. He never joined in the usual sports of the boys. Will you join us in a walk/game/discussion? They watched the game, and then they were invited to join in it. 3. take part in The leading group decided to tell all the workers to take part in the strike. In World War II Russians and Americans took an important part. Martin Luther king, Jr. took a leading part in the civil rights movement. The teacher made us pronounce the same word over and over again. They expressed their thanks to the host over and over again. The performance was warmly applauded and cheered over and over by the audience.
