what表示”所…的事物或人”，引导名词性从句.what=the thing(s) that (which)或those which. Show me what you have written.把你所写的给我看.What was regarded as impossible has now become a reality.过去认为不可能的事现已成为事实.He is not what he was a few years ago.他不是几年前的他了.
请看下列两道题：
1.A young child gains great pleasure when _____he does pleases his mother.

解析：“当一个小孩所做的事情让妈妈高兴时，他会感到非常快乐。”题中what he does pleases his mother等于the thing that he does pleases his mother,如果选择that,还缺少the thing，故此题答案应为D.

解析：意思是”他在会上所说的话让到会的每个人都大吃一惊.”句中的what he said at the meeting是一个从句作主语,意思上等于the thing that he said at the meeting。不可选that,原因之一同例1;其次,从语法结构上看,that引起主语从句不作成分,而句中恰恰缺少said的宾语;选择what,主语从句既有引导词,句意也完整.
