Teaching Plan 8A Unit 6 Reading (1): The Taiwan Earthquake —by Zhou Liying from Guangfu Middle School Ⅰ. Teaching Aims 1.To develop the Ss’ ability and skills of guessing words and reading comprehension. 2.To let the Ss learn how to describe natural disasters and how to protect themselves in the natural disasters. Ⅱ. Focus and difficulties The key words and phrases the comprehension of the story. Ⅲ. Teaching aids: a recorder, a multi-media computer, etc. Teaching Procedures Step 1. Warming up 1.Get the Ss to name some natural disasters. 2.Play a game. Drop some hints and get the Ss to guess what natural disaster we are describing. Step 2. Leading in Let the Ss watch a video about the Taiwan earthquake Ask: What is the video about? Step 3. Presentation Tell the Ss more about the earthquake, present some key words and phrases. e.g ‘shake be trapped in a hurry’ etc. Explain their meanings by using body language while show the Ss pictures that are related to the key words and phrases. Step 4. Skimming and answering 1.Show more information about the Taiwan earthquake. Say: The Taiwan earthquake is believed to be the strongest one in Taiwan last century. More than 2,300 people were killed. But a teenager named Timmy was lucky enough to survive. Do you want to know the story of his survival? 2. Play the tape, get the Ss to go through the story quickly and find out the answers to two questions. Step 5. Scanning Paragraph by paragraph , get the Ss to loudly by themselves. Then do some exercises for each paragraph. Paragraphs 1-2 Find some information for the two tables. Paragraphs3 Find out the answers to three questions . Paragraphs4-6 Find out the five things that Timmy did to save himself after he was trapped. Step 6. Error correction Play the tape for the Ss to listen and read along again. Then present the rewriting of the story sentence by sentence, get the Ss to find out the mistake in each of the sentences as quickly as the can. Step 7. An interview1. The Ss work in groups, Suppose one of their group members is Timmy and the others are news reporters. Have an interview with Timmy. Ask him any question about his survival. 2. Get one of the Ss to act as Jimmy, the rest of the class ask him questions. Ask him/her who he/she thinks is the best news reporter after the interview. 3. Get Jimmy and the best news reporter to open the Christmas present (some tips) that I have prepared for them, ask them to read out to the others to share with. Step 8. Assignment 1. Try to retell the story of Jimmy’s survival to your partner after class. 2. Finish the exercises on the sheet. Blackboard design: |
