Unit 4 Law and Order
Part I Welcome to the Unit
1. In the past, criminals committed obvious crimes like robbing someone, injuring someone or destroying property. (P49) 在过去,犯罪分子犯的是象抢劫某人之类的明显的罪行,结果伤害了某一个人或破坏了财产。

2. More and more crimes are less visible and involve the Internet. (P49) 越来越多的犯罪不怎么看得见,并且和因特网有关。

If someone is given permission to do something, they are allowed to do it:

without permission: 未经许可

ask (for) one’s permission: 请求某人的许可

to allow something:
[+ ing form of verb] The prison authorities permit visiting only once a month.
[+ object + to infinitive] The security system will not permit you to enter without the correct password. 没有正确的密码安全系统将不允许你进入。
As it was such a special occasion, she permitted herself a small glass of champagne.因为是这样的一个特殊的场合,她允许自己喝一小杯香摈。
FORMAL The law permits of no other interpretation.法律不容许其它的解释。
permit sb. to do sth.:允许某人做某事 =allow sb. to do sth.

8. The only solution to this problem is international cooperation. (P51) 这个问题的唯一的解决办法就是国际合作.
the solution to this problem 这个问题的解决办法, 其中to是介词, 其后接名词,代词或动名词, 类似的有:the key to solving the problem, the visit to Beijing, the entrance to the cinema, a trip to some place, a guide to a museum等.

9.All of this is further complicated by the legal situation regarding cybercrime. (P51) 有关网络犯罪的网络状况使形势更加复杂.
(1) situation: noun 形势, 情况

I'll worry about it if the situation arises. 如果这种情况发生,我将很担心.
注: situation后的定语从句常用where/in which引导, 这类词还有: point, case, system等.

(2) regard: verb 认为
Her parents always regarded her as the cleverest of their children. 她的父母总是认为她是他们的孩子中最聪明的.
regarding=关于about:
The company is being questioned regarding its employment policy. 这个公司正在就它的就业政策被提问.

court作为抽象名词,前面不加冠词, 但作为具体含义时,要加冠词, 试比较下面几组短语:
in hospital: 在住院 in the hospital: 在医院里
at school: 在上学 in the school: 在学校里
go to church: 去教堂做礼拜 go to the church: 到教堂里去
go to college 上大学

PartⅣ (Grammar and usage)
1. spy (spies ,spied ,spied, spying):

so…as to: 如此 …以致于… 表示结果
He got up so early as to catch the early bus. 他起得如此早以致于赶上了早班车.
so…that… 如此…以致于,引导结果状语从句
He got up so early that he caught the early. 他起得如此早以致于赶上了早班车.
so as to: 为了,相当于in order to, 但so as to不能用于句首。
He got up very early so as to catch the early bus. 他起得非常早以便可以赶上早班车.
so that:为了,引导目的状语从句;以致于,引导结果状语从句。
He got up very early so that he could catch the early bus. 他起得非常早以便可以赶上早班车.
He got up very early so that he caught the early bus. 他起得非常早以致于赶上了早班车.
Eg: Roses need special care______ they can live though the winter.
3.By order of the headmaster, these doors must be kept shut at all times.(P57) 根据校长的命令, 这些门必须一直关着。

4. Would you mind shutting the door? (P57) 你介意把门关上吗?
mind: 介意,反对,常用于疑问,否定,条件句中。
Do you think he'd mind if I borrowed his book?你认为如果我借他的书他会介意吗?
I don't mind having a dog in the house so long as it's clean. 我不介意在家里有只狗,只要它干净.
Would you mind turning (= Please would you turn) your radio down a little please?你能不能把收音机的声音调小一点?
Would /Do you mind me smoking? = Do you mind if I smoke = Would you mind id I smoked.
I don't mind what you wear so long as it's not that awful pink shirt. 我不介意你穿什么, 只要不是那件糟糕的粉红色的衬衫.

get /fall into a bad habit of = form a bad habit of 养成[染上]某习惯

Part V (Project)
1. similarly adv.
(1) 相似地; 类似地:
The two boys dress similarly. 两个小男孩穿得差不多一样。
(2) 也; 同样:
She was late and I similarly was delayed. 她迟到了, 我也晚了。
similar 形容词 “相像的,相仿的,类似的[(+to)]” 如:
His problem is similar to yours. 他的问题和你的相似。
similarity 名词
(1)类似;相似[不可数]
The similarity between the two reports suggests that one person wrote both.
那两个报告极其相似,这意味着它们出自一人的手笔。
(2)相似点;类似点[可数]
Bees and wasps both sting, but they have other similarities too.
蜜蜂和黄蜂都刺人,但它们还有其他相似之处。
2. strait n. 常以复数表示单数意义, 尤其用于专有名称
(1) 海峡; (联接两大水域之间的)狭窄水道 如:

3. aboard
aboard a=on 在…上+board 木板 有以下两种词性:
adv.: 在船(或飞机,车)上;上船(或飞机,车)
All passengers aboard fell into the river. 船上所有乘客皆落入河中。
prep:在(船,飞机,车)上;进入,上(船,飞机,车)
They were the last two to go aboard the ship. 他们是最后两位上船的。
介词短语on board = aboard
We went on board the ship. 我们登上了轮船。(做状语)
Everybody on board was worried and we were curious to find out what had happened.
飞机上的人都很着急,而且我们急于想了解出了什么事。(做后置定语)
注意:aboard ≠ abroad (adv.往国外, 到处, 海外)
4. apology 可数名词
(1) 道歉;赔罪[(+to/for)]
I make an apology to you for my rudeness last night. 昨天晚上我太粗暴,应该向你道歉。
(2) 辩解,辩护
Her open letter was really an apology for her way of life.
她的公开信实际上是对她生活方式的辩护。
动词用法:
apologize to sb.for (doing)sth. (因……而向某人道歉)
He apologized to her for not going to her party.他因没有出席她举行的宴会而向她表示歉意。
5. alone adj.(作表语、后置定语):
(1)单独的,独自的
She watches TV when she is alone. 独自一人时,她便看电视。
(2) 只有,仅;单单
The rent alone is $300. 单房租就三百元。
adv.(状语):
(1) 单独地
For years Mary lived alone in New York. 玛丽孤身一人在纽约生活了好几年。
(2) 独自地
I can do it alone. 我可以独自办理此事。
6.The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) defines intellectual property as
ideas, which include inventions, writing, artwork, symbols and designs used in

7. Intellectual property can be classified into two categories---industrial property, such as inventions, trademarks and industrial designs, and copyright, which applies to novels, films, music, artwork and architectural designs. 8. If someone who spends his or her time, effort and money writing a book, for example, he or she deserves to be paid for it, even if it is just a draft. (P62)例如, 如果有人花了他或她的时间, 精力和金钱来写一本书, 即使只是草稿, 他或她也值得他人为此付费.
deserve: v. 应受, 值得
vt. + sth. After all that hard work, you deserve a holiday. 在辛苦的工作之后,你值得有一个假期.

vi. I hope they get the punishment they deserve. 我希望他们得到他们应受的惩罚.

9. Because of this, the Chinese government has added its signature to several laws protecting intellectual property. (P62) 为此, 中国政府在几部保护知识产权的法律上加上了自己的签名.
add: v 增加
If you add (= calculate the total of) three and four you get seven. 你把三和四加起来,你就得到七.
She's added a Picasso to her collection. 她在她的收藏里又加了一幅毕加索.
Her colleagues' laughter only added to (= increased) her embarrassment. 她的同事们的笑声只是增加了她的尴尬.
addition n. 增加

add up to: 总计
eg: The engine of the ship was out of order and bad weather ________ the helpless of the crew at sea.

10. However, in everyday life, we are now faced with decisions about how to respect intellectual property rights.(P63) 但是在日常生活中, 我们现在面临着如何保护知识产权的决定.
face: v. 面对
If you face a problem, or a problem faces you, you have to deal with it:
be faced with 意为 “面临; 面对 ” 如:
This country is now faced with the prospect of war. 这个国家目前正面临战争。
= This country is now facing the prospect of war.
cf: lose/save face (丢脸/保全面子) in the face of (面临…)
to one’s face(直接地) make a face (做鬼脸)

11. The copying of copyright material is known as piracy. (P63) 这种复制有版权的材料的行为被称为盗版.
be known as…: 被称为…; 以…知名; 被认为是…
be known for…: 因为…而闻名
be known to sb….:为某人所知道
He is known as a writer. 他作为一个作家而闻名.
He is known for singing well. 他因为唱歌好而闻名.
It is known to us all that he is good at writing. 众所周知,他擅长于写作.
=As is known to us all, he is good at writing.
=What is known to us all is that he is good at writing.
