Teaching Procedures Step Ⅰ Greeting Greet the whole class as usual. Step Ⅱ Lead in When we read a newspaper or a magazine, we don’t like to read it passage by passage from the very beginning to the end. We just want to read the passages that we are interested in. Yes or no? 1. How can you find the passages that you are interested in as quickly as possible? ( By reading the titles or headlines.) Yes, the title always tells us what the passage is about, that is, the main idea of the passage. But sometimes we are asked to read a passage without a title, for example, in an examination. 2. How to get the main idea of a passage without a title? How to choose the best title of the passage? Step Ⅲ Presentation and practice Ask the students to have a discussion in pairs on “How to get the main idea of a passage without a title or How to choose the best title of the passage?” Check the students’ answers and give them more tips on this topic. Skill: skim the passage and find the topic sentence 1. Look for the topic sentence(s) (1) at the beginning of it (2) at the end of it (3) at both the beginning and the end of it (4) in the middle of it Let the students underline the topic sentences of Passages A-D in 4 minutes. After the students finish them, let them check the answers with their group members. Let the students continue to do more exercises: choose the best answer for passages E, and F. The students do the exercises in 5 minutes. After the students finish them, let them discuss their opinions in groups of four for 2 minutes. Check the answers with the whole class and solve any questions or problems the students have. 3. Just now we found the topic sentence in each passage, but sometimes it is very difficult for us to find the topic sentence in some passage or there is no topic sentence at all. What should we do this time? First, get the main idea of each paragraph. Second, summarize the main idea in our own words, according to the structure of the passage. And then, compare it with the choices to see which one is the best. So I think it is necessary to know how a good title should be. Step Ⅳ Consolidation 1. Discussion on “How a good title should be?” 1) Let students look at some good titles to find out the characteristics of them. 2) After listening to the students’ opinions, show them some general rules on a good title. “ simple, accurate, complete, new ” Simple — easy to understand Accurate — express the writer’s opinion fully and correctly. Complete — include the main information. New — the title should be fashionable, attractive and can arouse the readers’ interest. 3) Let the students read passage G to have a try.
Once you make a decision, there still are some ways to check whether your choice is accurate. 1). Suppose you are asked to write a passage using the title that you have chosen, how will you write it? 2). Use your experience in reading Chinese articles to help you. Take passage H for example.
