v.  震动；震惊。如：
I was shocked when I heard about her death.

n.  视力；视觉；视线；看见。如：
He lost his sight in an accident when he was only four.

I caught sight of her from the bus.
我从公共汽车上看到了她。
（catch sight of：看见 —— 指事先没有预料的动作。）
The ship was finally out of sight. 那只船终于消失看不见了。
（out of sight：看不见，离开视野）

sign
n.  标记；符号；征兆；迹象。如：He made a sign for me to cross the street.

There are signs that his health is getting better.
他有健康恢复的迹象。（通过观察才能察觉。）
v.  签名。如：
I signed (my name) on the contract.
我在合同上签了字。

adj. 多余的；剩下的；空闲的。如：
Do you often read books in your spare time?

Can you spare me 5 minutes? I have something important to tell you.
你能为我抽出5分钟时间吗？我有重要的事情告诉你。

辨析： spare和free
两者在形容人时，都可以表示“空闲的”。区别在于，spare time大多指的是工作之余用来休息的时间，如8小时工作日以外的时间；而free time则多指“没有事情做”的“闲暇时间”，暗含着该人本来就不是很忙。
special
adj.  特别的；特殊的；专门的；专用的；亲密的。如：
This patient needs special treatment.
这名病人需要特别护理。
（强调和其他病人的区别。）
They will also build a special highway for transporting oil.
他们还将修建一条运输石油的专用高速公路。（强调“排他性”。）
He is a special friend of the general.
他是将军的密友。（“不一般”的关系。）

spirit
n.  精神；灵魂；幽灵；妖精。如：
Nothing could break his spirit.
没有什么能够摧垮他的精神。
（也可以是“灵魂”。）
I can’t go to the game today, but I am with you in spirit.
虽然我今天不能去看你们的比赛，但在精神上我和你们是在一起的。（in spirit：在精神上）
In fact, no one saw a real spirit with his own eyes.
事实上，没有人亲眼见过真正的妖精。

辨析： spirit，ghost，devil和genie:
这几个词都和“妖魔鬼怪”有关。spirit指的是神怪故事中的“妖精”，大多由其他生物变成； ghost指的是“鬼魂，魔鬼”，多在地狱中出现；而devil和genie则是可怕的“妖怪，恶魔”，具有强大的魔力，如genie in the bottle（瓶中的恶魔）等。
spread
v.  伸展；展开；传播；蔓延。如：
The bird spread its wings and flew away.
这只鸟展开翅膀，飞走了。
He spread the map on the floor and showed me the position.
他把地图铺在地上，并给我指出了那个位置。
The good news soon spread throughout the city.
这个好消息很快传遍了全城。
（spread在此作不及物动词。）
n.  延伸；蔓延。如：
Flies and mosquitoes can cause the spread of diseases.
苍蝇和蚊子都会传播疾病。

stare
v.  凝视；盯着看。如：
It is not polite to stare at others.
盯着别人看是一种不礼貌的行为。
She stared them into silence.
她瞪了他们一眼，他们都不说话了。
n.  凝视。如：
He gave her a rude stare and said nothing.
他很无礼地瞪了她一眼，什么也没说。（a stare表示“瞪一眼”这个动作。）

    辨析：stare和glare
    这两个词都有“瞪”的意思，但表现出来的感情色彩不同。stare有可能是因为惊异、责怪，或者是出于想给对方一个下马威的原因；而glare多半是表示对对方极度愤怒，给人一种“怒目圆睁”的感觉。
stick
n.  棍；棒；手杖。如：
The old man walked with the help of a stick.
那位老人借助拐杖行走。
v.  伸出；粘住；粘贴；坚持。如：
He stuck his tongue out.
他伸出了舌头。（注意stick的过去式是stuck。）
I stuck a stamp on the envelope.
我在信封上贴了一张邮票。
You must stick on your rules at any time.
无论什么时候你都要坚持自己的原则。（stick to：坚持）
