Our courses are divided into two categories: compulsory courses and optional ones. The 13 compulsory courses we’re learning include Chinese, mathematics, English, PE, and arts. We are also offered optional courses like oral English, British culture, dancing, painting, table tennis and martial arts. These courses, though a bit too much for us, appeal to us students very much, and we enjoy most of them. This term, we have more free time than before. Our teachers hope that we can spend it doing our homework, going over what has been learned and previewing next day’s lessons. Of course, we can also relax ourselves a bit. As to our parents, they also expect us to devote our free time to our homework and attend supplementary courses. Actually we hope to have more free time and less homework. We wish we could do what we like, having some outdoor activities, joining some clubs, going outing and so on.
附:听力原稿: Text 1 M: How about my food? I’ve been sitting here for almost half an hour. W: I’m sorry, sir. It must be ready by now.
Text 2 W: Jack, would you mind driving me to the station? M: Sure, why not! Text 3 M: The room is filled with smoke. I can hardly breathe. W: I agree. Smoking should not be permitted in this room at all. Text 4 M: How did your parents like the play they attended last week? W: My mother thought the language was terrible, but my father liked it. Text 5 M: My library book is ten days overdue. Can you tell me how much I owe? W: Let’s see, ten days at 5 cents a day will cost you fifty cents. Text 6 W: Hi, Stanley, going to the football game today? M: No. I found it easier to follow football on television than in the stadium. When I see the game in person, I feel as if I’m too far away from the action. And I always lose track of the ball. W: I know just what you mean. Besides, on television the new cameras they use give you super view of all the play. But there’s always so much excitement when you’re there in person, with people cheering and shouting. M: You’re right. But I’d like to know exactly what I’m shouting for. And if I can’t even see who has the ball, I can’t get very excited. W: I see your point. Text 7 W: Do you know that astronauts have made something in space? M: No. What kind of things? W: Tiny plastic balls. M: Balls? Do you mean to tell me that astronauts have nothing better to do than make such things in space? It means to me they could make more useful things out there. W: Oh, but they can be used for many scientific purposes, such as carrying out cancer research. M: That sounds better. But why make such objects in space rather than on earth? W: Because the earth pull affects them. The balls produced on earth are often out of shape, not exactly round. Text 8 W: Hello, this is Ann Smith speaking. May I speak to Professor White, please? M: Hello, Professor White speaking. W: Hello, Professor. I’d like to take your course on modern physics. M: I’m sorry, but there are already too many students in the class. W: I know. But I’m a student from another university. The course isn’t offered at my school and I have a keen interest in it. M: I see. Have you studied much physics? It’s an advanced course, you know. W: Yes. I am majoring in physics. M: Well, I’ll do my best. Why don’t you come to my office next week? I’ll be in all day on Wednesday. I can tell you more about the class and the other courses here. If all else fails, you can register for my course next semester. We’ll cover many of the same topics. W: Thanks. I’ll come on Wednesday. Text 9 W: Well, George, we just have two weeks before the exams before the school year is over. What do you plan to do this summer? M: I’m going to teach English to some immigrants in the university’s community service program. W: Sounds interesting. Don’t you need to speak a foreign language for a job like that? M: No. You have just to present the language and give the students a chance to practice speaking. W: Come to think of it. That’s the way I was taught to speak Chinese. But speaking Chinese didn’t help me much learn to read and write Chinese. M: But my students won’t need to read and write English, at least not now. They are more interested in the spoken language. W: You sound pretty knowledgeable about that. How come you know so much? M: I took a course in Teaching English as a Second Language last year, when I was in China. I’ve also talked with the program administers a lot. I think I would like to be an ESL teacher after I graduate. Text 10 Lydia intended to walk to Meryton that morning, and every sister except Mary, who preferred to read, agreed to go with her. When they entered Meryton, the attention of the sisters was drawn by the crowds of people. And their attention was soon caught by a young man whom they had never seen before. He was of a most handsome appearance and was walking with an officer on the other side of the road. All were struck with the stranger’s manners. Kitty and Lydia knew the officer, and determined to find out if possible who his friends were. They led their way across the street, pretending to see something in a shop opposite, and had just reached the pathway when the two gentlemen arrived at the same place. Mr. Donny, the officer, greeted them directly and begged&n
