And I annoyed my mum to allow me to go to bed late so that I could watch the movies for grown-ups only. They were more interesting. She didn’t want me to feel sleepy the following day but she always gave in. A UK study of more than 11,000 seven-year-olds concluded that there is a link between sleep patterns and brain power. The analysis showed that kids who have no regular bedtime or who go to bed later than 21:00 have lower scores in reading and maths. Why? Scientists, led by Prof Amanda Sacker from University College London, think that lack of sleep may disturb natural body rhythms(节奏) and weaken how well the brain learns new information. According to the researchers, by the age of seven more than half the children have a regular bedtime of between 19:30 and 20:00. Maybe much earlier than you and me. I’m not sure if my mother would agree with this study’s results. A reader using the name “ClaireyBeary77” wrote to the website to say that her five-year-old son goes to sleep around 22:00. After having dinner, doing his homework, playing and watching TV with her, he goes to bed late and does well at school. Another mother, “Lisa337”, blamed the teachers. She wrote,”I wish someone would tell teachers that plenty of sleep is more important than homework for small children!” It made me think how difficult it must be for kids to go to bed today when there are so many interesting things to do, Who can go to bed early and miss hours of excitement with computer games? I would have played all nght! And what about your friends on social media? You can’t sleep when they are awake somewhere on the other side of the world! What time did you go to bed when you were a child? Did it cause you any problems?

B In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other animal. This sometimes happens with humans also. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy. From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t get to see this soft side of others often, we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that’s in them. Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I had never done in twenty four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed. No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak. Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those are and far between. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared. 46. The author has discovered that people will feel happy when ______. A. the offer their help B. they receive others’ help C. they feel others’ kindness D. they show their weakness 47. The author feels sad sometimes because ______. A. he has a soft heart B. he relies much on others C. some people pretend to be kind D. some people fail to see the kindness in others 48. What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights? A. They speed up to pass. B. They waited with patience. C. They tried their best to help. &n
