For every “if” in life, there’s a solution, but different people deal with it differently. The advertisement above shows us that there are always some unexpected “ifs”. But not all of us can foresee them clearly. So, buying insurance for life is likely the best way to protect ourselves from a deadly “if”. To my mind, “if” can be good, “if” can be alarming, or” if” can be deadly. Life, as described in the picture above, is not only full of incidents, but also of many invisible possibilities, opportunities, and other good fortunes. The problem is many of us always take life for granted, and do not have enough plans for such various “ifs”. And always feel regretted when they eventually come. So what I want to stress is if all of us can do our best to prepare for the future, we will either make up for the unbearable loss and sufferings, or make it possible to seize all the fortunes in store for us. 听力材料 1. W: Excuse me, I’d like to give some flowers to my friend. Would you please recommend some flowers?
M: Let’s see, these fresh roses are very nice. 2. M: You look great, you seem to be much thinner than before. W: Yeah, I keep walking 5 kilometers everyday, and have lost 10 kilograms.
3. W: Do you know there will be a speech after class? M: I heard about that, when will it start? I have to hand in my paper first.
4. W: Did you see the movie on channel 8 last night? M: No, I went to the library to borrow some books on science. Did you see the movie? W: Yes, it was very interesting.
5. W: It’s a fine day, isn’t it? M: Yes, but what’s the use if we are stuck in the classroom. W: We will have time to enjoy the sunshine after class. Let’s go to see the football match at the sports field. M: Fine.
6-7 M: Working on movies must be really exciting. W: Oh yeah, but it’s also very hard work. A one-minute scene in a film can take days to shoot. M: Why is that? W: Well, each scene isn’t film just once. Lots of different shots have to be done. Only the best ones are used in the film. M: So, how many shots are taken? W: Usually as many as 20, one scene may be shot from five or six different angles. W: Wow! I didn’t realize that. W: Why don’t you come and visit the studio? You can see how the special effects are done. M: Great, I’d love to!
8-10 W: Bob, late again. What’s the excuse this time? M: I just, I forgot to set the alarm clock and I… W: Yeah, and last week one of the children wasn’t well. M: Yes, I know, I am really sorry, I promise it won’t happen again. W: Never mind, look, I’ve got a bit of a problem here, you see, our manager phone just now, and I just don’t know what’s wrong with you, so I told him that you were in a meeting and that you’d call him as soon as got back. M: Oh, thanks very much. W: And, er, a meeting has been called for this evening at 6 o’clock and I can’t go. M: Oh, I’ve arranged to go out with my wife. W: Oh, never mind, I will cover the meeting, don’t worry.
11-12 M: Who was your influence, Kate? W: Em, probably my grandfather. I spent a lot of time with him when I was a kid, and he taught me how important it is to set goals, and not be too disappointed when things don’t go the way you want. M: That’s a nice attitude. And do you set goals for yourself? W: Sure. Every year I think about what goals I want to achieve and what I need to do to achieve them. It’s usually just a little thing, like improving my tennis game, or sometimes something more ambitious, like learning a new language, but I always start out with a goal. Then I break it down into the steps I need to take in order to get there. I know it sounds boring, but it works for me!
13-15 W: No. 1 Travel, how can I help you? M: I am planning a trip to Thailand for two weeks, can you tell me if I need a visa? W: I believe you need a tourist visa. M: Can you tell me how I get one? W: Well, you have to contact the Thai embassy for a visa, if you apply by mail, it will take about three weeks. M: Ok, I will mail my application. Is it possible to fly a nonstop to Chiang Mai from Chicago? W: Well, if you depart on Monday, you can fly direct there. But if you depart on any other day of the week, you will have to stop over in Bangkok. M: I see, what about hotels? Is it necessary to make a reservation in advance? W: It’s a good idea, especially at this time of the year. Anyway, I suggest you allow plenty of time to get a visa before your trip. M: Ok, thank you for your help.
