Xiao Li, my neighbor, works as a rickshaw driver and taxis people along hutongs for tours.
One day, as he was waiting for the next customer, a foreigner waved at him. He went over to the foreigner and asked if he needed a ride. As they couldn’t understand each other, they had to make gestures for the price of a ride. The foreigner put up two fingers and Xiao Li put up five. To Xiao Li’s surprise, the foreigner gave him three one-dollar notes.
He was even more astonished when he was made him to sit on the passenger seat while the foreigner himself began to operate the rickshaw. Xiao Li kept wondering why the foreigner would pay him to operate the rickshaw himself. After thinking hard, he decided that the foreigner might have never ridden a rickshaw before and wanted to be a rickshaw driver for the fun of it.
